Description
Limited edition letterpress book with 12 cliché verre prints, 1 loose cliché verre print in a folder, black coated metal wing; slipcase.
The Island of Rota features the art of photographer Abelardo Morell, the writing of neurologist Oliver Sacks, and the work of designer Ted Muehling. Excerpted from Sacks' book "The Island of the Colorblind and Cycad Island", the text concerns the natural history of the island of Rota in Micronesia, where a variety of ferns and cycads flourish. Accompanying the text are 12 black-and-white cliché-verres by Morell. Cliché verre is a process developed in the nineteenth century that combine the techniques of the graphic arts, viz., drawing and printmaking, with the then new medium of photography. The botanical images here were made by arranging and manipulating ink and plant matter on glass and then scanning the glass to create digitally printed photos.
A tactile work of art, the book also features a replica of an insect wing cut from thin black-coated metal, a handmade paper casting of a cycad leaf, and two lasercut images suggestive of the night sky that filter the light. Other elements presented in the book include a lithographically printed map and a letterpress printed map reproduced from Philippe Vandermaelen's "Atlas universel." The book is accompanied by a folder that houses an additional loose cliché-verre print by the artist entitled Typhoon.
