Description
In 2008, the House of Fairy Tales published a stunning portfolio featuring twenty-two signed prints that sought to reimagine the diverse narratives of these familiar childhood stories. It included work by some of the most acclaimed artists working in Britain at the time, including Peter Blake, Harland Miller and Paula Rego.
An arts-based education project which uses the narrative scope of fairy tales to provide creative, innovative and transformative learning experiences for children of all ages and their families, the House of Fairy Tales has been responsible for some of the most innovative and thought-provoking outreach programmes in contemporary art. Hard to find in its complete state, The House of Fairy Tales portfolio represents the pinnacle of what can be achieved in the printmaking studio. Sourcing individual images is incredibly difficult.
The vision of Hogarth with the style of a child, Adam Dant's grand panoramas mix humour and pathos with a surreal sense of the absurd. He developed and fine tuned this voice with his Donal Parsnips daily journal, a tiny photocopied comic that he would draw and reproduce daily and hand out to people during the day. Each comic newspaper would show the exploits of his part clown, part everyman protagonist as he struggled to come to terms with his world. Adam Dant's recent series of detailed pen and wash drawings show Old Europe taking over the hallowed halls and landmarks of New York. The Hapsburgs occupying the Public Library with their Literary and Equestrian pursuits. The Statue of Liberty replaced by the classic melancholic Pierrot the French clown complete with minute detail of the builders eating their sandwiches on the scaffolding. These images play politics with classic storytelling. Adam Dant's work creates elaborate theatre sets for a modern fairy tale.
For the portfolio he has made a lithographic drawing of an old-fashioned wooden child's bed vacated of its inhabitant who has abandoned a much loved bear to its fate. Under each bed on each of the prints the artist has depicted a nightmarish creature, the classic bogeyman. Each of the 60 editions has a unique hand-drawn monster.
