Alex Kanevsky
(Russian, born 1963)
Biography
Alex Kanevsky is an American-Lithuanian artist whose figurative paintings display dynamism, movement, and spatial compression, captured by short, gestural brushstrokes in the vein of Francis Bacon or Lucien Freud. With evidence of both Impressionism and Cubism in his practice, the painter collapses time through layers of pigment erasure and application. Born in 1963 in Rostvo-na-Donu, Russia, he studied theoretical mathematics at Vilnius University in Lithuania before moving to the United States in the 1980s. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 to foster his creativity. “I love being an artist. Having a career would kill that joy. Career implies progress, some sort of goals and their accomplishment. I don’t have that,” Kanevsky has said. An admirer of Alberto Giacometti and Frank Auerbach, he currently lives and works in Philadelphia, PA, and contributed miniature paintings to director Charlie Kaufman’s 2008 film Synecdoche, New York.
