Description
“Alba” by Alex Katz, a Brooklyn-born figurative painter, renowned for his use of bold solid color and streamlined form. Depicting the titular subject, a recurring character in Katz’s work, this stark portrait channels a distinct intensity in its simplicity of form and lack of color. Rendered only in subtle shades of gray and desaturated neutral tones, a woman confronts the viewer with direct eye contact, her piercing brown eyes the most vibrant element in the composition. Standing in front of an implied mirror, the reflection of her back places her in three-dimensional space while cleverly subverting the constraints of the picture plane. The piece is exemplary of Katz’s refined aesthetic, and distinct use of simplicity as a means to create interest. The limited edition print measures 34 ½ inches tall by 29 ½ inches wide, and is signed and numbered by the artist.
