Description
John Lennon and Yoko Ono in front of the Dakota apartment in New York in 1980. The text reads: "Yoko Ono and John Lennon New York City 1980 Coming out of seclusion after five years, John Lennon and Yoko Oko agreed to be interviewed to promote their new album, 'Double Fantasy." One of the most powerful shots captured was the couple posing in front of the Dakota, the iconic building that has become a permanent part of the Lennon legend. The Dakota, located at the corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West, has been home to dozens of the world's elite entertainers including Leonard Bernstein, Roberta Flack, Boris Karloff, Gilda Radner, Rudolf Nureyev, Judy Garland & Lauren Bacall. It was also famous for denying residency to many notable people including Gene Simmons and Billy Joel. On December 8, 1989, two weeks after this photo was taken, John Lennon was shot on the doorstep of the Dakota. He was 40 years old when he was assassinated. While still a Beatle, Lennon was asked how he might die. Lennon ironically replied, 'I'll probably be popped off by some loony.' Photograph ©2009 by Allan Tannenbaum from the book 'New York in the 70s.'"
