At a certain size, painting a small painting with precise and meticulous detail becomes an art in itself. So is the case of "Three Children" by English Childen's book illustrator Amy Millicent Sowerby. But Sowerby goes further than just painting a very small narrative scene. She does it with consummate style and compositional exactitude. Her work approaches the talent and quality Jessie Willcox Smith and other great children's book illustrators of the Golden Age. Unsigned. Millicent Sowerby (1878-1967) was an English painter and illustrator best known for her illustrations in Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland. Yet critics of the time considered her illustrations for her sister's books to be much better than the Alice pictures. In 1911 a critic stated 'Milicent Sowerby is Kate Greenaway come to life again.' A few faint scattered foxing in the upper right quadrant. Presents well overall with no other visible issues to note. A 1st Edition of 1906 comes with the original art.
