Description
This is a lithograph by noted French modernist André Brasilier. It is a still life, which is a favorite subject of the artist. Bold yellow flowers are arranged in a cream footed bowl. A black vase is to the right of the bowl and both rest on a yellow table. While a traditional subject, Brasilier handles it in a very modern fashion. Shapes are reduced to simplifies geometric shapes, perspective is flattened, and the colors are bold and unnatural (the leaves and fruit are black for example). It also has a diffuse quality that is characteristic of Brasilier's work. It is on a full sheet 22 x 29 inches. It is signed in pencil lower right and the edition 20/125 is given in pencil lower left. The colors are vivid with no fading. The is no paper loss, foxing, or staining. There are some condition issues. There is mat burn present with some paper toning. This is far enough away from the image that it should be able to be covered with a mat. There is residual hinge tape at the top of the piece. The price reflects the condition.
André Brasilier (1929 - ) André Brasilier is a French artist known for his paintings and lithographs. His art is representational and favorite subjects include horses and musical subjects (His first exhibition in 1959 was entitled “Autour de la musique” (“About Music”)). His work encompasses many classical themes including figurative and still life, but with a modernist approach using bright colors and a diffuse representation that gives them a dream-like quality. He, like many other artists, was heavily influence by Japanese woodblock prints. He came from an artistic family and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Paris. His work was recognized early in his career as he received the Florence Blumenthal Award in 1952 and the Prix de Rome for painting in 1953. He lived in Rome briefly in the 1950s and traveled around Europe (Holland, Germany, Norway, Sweden) before returning to Paris where he spent the rest of his career. While best known for paintings and lithographs, in the 1980s he worked creating ceramics at Vallauris (much like Picasso). In a recent interview he also discussed a new artform campanology (the decoration of bells). He was also commissioned to created artwork for the interior of the chapel of Arnac Pompadour, in the Corrèze region of France. Thies commission involves the creation of panels 25 meters (82 feet) across and 7 meters (23 feet) high. His work has been the subject of several retrospectives including one hundred artworks from 1950-1980 at the Château de Chenonceau in 1980. Other retrospectives were held at the Musée Picasso-Château Grimaldi in Antibes (1988), the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg (2005), the Museum Haus Ludwig für Kunstausstellungen Saarlois in Germany (2007), and by Sotheby’s Hong Kong (2022). In addition to these museums, his work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
