Description
Botello’s signature flat headed, cartoonesque portraits are instantly recognizable. In this case, a young girl sits in her chair hugging her one eyed or winking doll. The girl’s hands and feet have four fingers and toes respectively, whilst her face is halved by two tonal values, more of Botello’s stylistic touches.
Ángel Botello was a Spanish painter known for his use of vibrant colors and depictions of island life and people in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. His work is often compared to that of Gauguin, both for his focus on Caribbean women and for his use of bold lines and flat colors.
