Anna Gaskell

Biography
Anna Gaskell is a contemporary American artist known for exploring themes such as Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland (1865). Employing photography, video, and drawing, Gaskell creates ominous images of women that nod to familiar or historic narratives. “The stories and events that I choose to use as jumping-off points are simply that. They are only a part of what goes into the work, and perhaps a useful reference for viewers,” she explained. “Trying to combine fiction, fact, and my own personal mishmash of life into something new is how I make my work.” Born on October 22, 1969 in Des Moines, IA, Gaskell attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before receiving her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1995, where she studied under Gregory Crewdson. Having mostly made self-portraits in a style similar to that of Cindy Sherman, Gaskell began instead to photograph young girls in odd or ambiguous scenes, as seen in her series wonder (1996–1997). The artist currently lives and works in New York, NY. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, among others.
