Biography
Atelier van Lieshout is a Dutch studio founded by the sculptor Joep van Lieshout. The founder has maintained the workshop’s focus on the convergence of art objects with utilitarian furniture design. Van Lieshout’s work raises questions about how we live, the ties between power and corruption, and of the sinister consequences of taking the values that govern our society to their extremes. Founded in the city of Rotterdam in 1995, the studio employs several artists in its workshop. Ideas surrounding utopian and dystopian societies are often part of their work’s aim to present the public with difficult questions of success or failure. This is perhaps best evinced in the installation Slave City (2005–2009), which was included in the “2016 Bosch Grand Tour,” celebrating the 500th anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch. Today, the atelier’s works are held in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
