Axel Einar Hjorth

(Swedish, 1888–1959)

Axel Einar Hjorth was a Swedish architect and designer who created furniture using wood such as oak, rosewood, and birch. It was his application of Art Deco and Modernist aesthetics that make his work an early model of contemporary Swedish design, with its emphasis on minimalism and functionality. Hjorth’s designs are reminiscent of Gerrit Rietveld, a member of the De Stijl movement, which included Bart van der Leck and Piet Mondrian, and whose work was similarly inspired by modernism, with an emphasis on form, simplicity, and function. Born on March 7, 1888 in Krokek, Sweden, he went on to study at the Higher School of Art and Design, College of Arts in Stockholm. During his career, Hjorth worked for several furniture companies including Nordiska Kompanient. His works are in the collection of the National Museum in Stockholm. Hjorth died on June 21, 1959 in Stockholm, Sweden.
