Description
Balthus (1908-2001) is one of the most esteemed painters of the 20th century. Recognized for his dream-like compositions and taboo subject matter, Balthus uniquely blends elements of classicism with themes of modernity.
Balthus' work is saturated with traditional technique, lending references to his moody, atmospheric scapes that are often imbued with Surrealist subtexts.
Perhaps Balthus is most infamously known for his infatuation with youth, portraying sexually suggestive (and in some cases, blatantly erotic) depictions of pre-pubescent girls throughout his oeuvre. The controversial theme was a point of contention throughout his career and beyond, with a recent petition calling for additional context to support his work on display at The Met.
This intimately sized work on paper features the profile of Laurence Reverdin. Reverdin worked as an assistant to Albert Skira, a Swiss publisher and art dealer, and was a recurring muse in Balthus' work.
This delicate drawing captures Reverdin's innocence, a distinct and recognizable trope for Balthus. Her placid disposition is complemented by softly rendered cheeks, along with the loose wisps of hair that are gently tied back.
This is a unique output from the height of Bathus' career and a rare opportunity to acquire an original piece from one of the most illustrious artists of our time.
In 2019, a new auction record of $19 million was established for Balthus' painting, "Therese sur une banquette" (1939). His work is currently on display internationally at the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
