Barnaby Furnas (American, born )

Barnaby Furnas (American, b.1973) was born in Philadelphia, PA. Brought up in a strict Quaker environment, his early artistic endeavors began as a form of teenage rebellion through Graffiti Art. He channeled this artistic nature and received a BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 1995, and later an MFA at Columbia University, in 2000. His artwork is known for its bold and sometimes violent aesthetic, evident in the layered and gestural chaos of his images. Although not limited to one medium, it is Furnas’ use of watercolor that epitomizes his unique style. He is represented by the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York, Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the Stuart Shave Modern Art Gallery in London. Furnas has exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery; the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, PA; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; and the Royal Academy of Arts, London, among other institutions.
