Bernard Dufour

(French, 1922–2016)

Bernard Dufour is a French artist known for his Sapphic paintings of young woman. Born on November 21, 1922 in Paris, France, Dufour fought during World War II and was forced into labor when captured by the German army, coincidentally working alongside the novelist Alain Robbe-Grillet. He studied art at the University of Heidelberg and, after the war, staged two successful solo shows and participated in the second documenta exhibition. Initially an abstract artist, Dufour soon turned to nude figures engaged in erotically charged acts that hint at specific fetishes—such as sunbathing or fitting a slipper, as depicted in his cheeky painting Ballerina, Tying Her Slipper (1975). Another notable work from that same year is Holger Meins, in which the corpse of the Red Army Faction martyr Holger Meins is depicted Dufour’s wife defecating. The artist has had solo exhibitions in New York, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro, including at the Galerie Patrice Trigano in 2015. He lives in Paris, France.
