Description
This is a watercolor of a building from the Machu Picchu ruins in Peru. It is depicted in vibrant colors and from a very low perspective--quite typical of the artist. He did a number of images from Machu Picchu over the course of his career.
Bill Kohn (1931 – 2004) Bill Kohn was an American artist known for his vibrant use of color and unusual perspectives. He is a St. Louis native and spent most of his life there including 40 years of teaching in the Art Department of Washington University, where he had received his Bachelor of Fine Arts. He subsequently studied at the Atelier 17 in Paris and the National University of Mexico. He received his Master of Arts from Mills College, Oakland, CA. He did additional study of printmaking at the Salzburg Lithography Studio, Austria. He was awarded several fellowships including a Fulbright grant to study painting in India. His work won many awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award: IN/FORM 6, St. Louis, MO (2000) and the Missouri Arts Award: Individual Artist, Missouri Arts Council (2002). He had extensive solo and group exhibitions including a solo exhibition at the St. Louis Art Museum and a posthumous exhibition, Centering on the Grand at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. His work is held in many major collections including the St. Louis Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum (MO), the University of Missouri at St. Louis, and the Washington University Gallery of Art.
His work focused on architecture and its setting within landscapes. These included buildings from Europe and Peru (Machu Picchu). His magnum opus, Grand Center, that he was working on at the time of his death involved the buildings on Grand Boulevard in St. Louis.
