Bill Scott

Bill Scott is an American painter known for his vivid abstractions. With an underlying patchwork of organic forms and bright colors, Scott evokes the sensations and textures of nature. “I think I paint bittersweet fictions. I don’t believe the imagery I paint exists,” he has explained. Born in 1956 in Haverford, PA, he grew up with a love of Impressionism and especially the paintings of Berthe Morisot. He went on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts during the late 1970s. In 1980, while living on a travel grant in Paris, Scott befriended the painter Joan Mitchell, who over the next few years allowed him to stay with her at her home in Vétheuil, France. Over the course of his career, Scott has continued to produce harmonious works that invoke both nature and human imagination. The artist lives and works in Philadelphia, PA. Today, his works are held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
