My sculptural practice engages traditional sculptural forms to explore cultural questions that puzzle or intrigue me. I generally find myself introducing some contemporary material, found object or other element into classical figurative or representational contexts. In recent years my work has centered on the human head/bust. Prior to that I developed a large body of high-relief, wall-hung sculptures made by pressing objects into clay, thereby creating a mold, then pouring over it a single cast of hard plasters blended with powdered Carrara marble.
Bob was born in Oakland, CA and lives and has his studio in Rye, NY . His work has been exhibited in solo shows in Santa Fe (Jane Sauer Gallery) and New York (Lower East Side-Dacia Gallery and Bushwick- Anthony Philip Fine Art) as well as group shows in Paris, Hong Kong, Italy and throughout the U.S. His sculptures are in permanent collections of the Burchfield-Penney museum in Buffalo, NY and Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia in Italy. The work has been reviewed in numerous art publications including Hyperallergic and featured in the NY Times, Wall St Journal and other national media. Bob spent 8 years in formal study of sculpture, centering on his years at the Art Students League of New York.

Description
I had become envious of collage artists. The spontaneity of their compositions coupled with the specificity of the design elements, often images of real-world things, stood in stark contrast to what most sculptors could do. Shaping and transforming actual material is so time-consuming and expensive that sculptors are often drawn to ‘over-work’ a piece. Ensuring it is absolutely perfect before going into the foundry, for instance, can mean the spontaneity is leached out of a piece, or that compositions are safe when in fact more risks should be taken.
blending ground Carrara marble with my super-hard plasters helps the pieces refract light the way sculpted marble does, and alludes to fixing our own cultural icons in the exact material which civilizations have used for millennia to immortalize their apex achievements for posterity.
