Description
I sculpted the new Emma, 2024 in my studio in Rye, NY using recycled clay which I’ve kept moist and been re-using for 15 years. My moldmaker and I made a complex rubber mold of the original with about 20 separate pieces to it. For this new version we have cast the sculpture in three materials: bonded marble, bonded aluminum and bonded bronze. In this process the materials are ground into a powder, blended with a pourable resin and worked into each part of the rubber mold, then re-assembled around an armature into the finished piece, an exact replica of the original clay, now in these more durable and visually interesting materials.
The piece is hardy and can live outdoors even in extreme climates. It can appropriately be shown on the ground, on a low (8-12”) base or even on a taller pedestal, 30” provided it is stable. The custom base made from reclaimed steel slabs has been clear-coated against rust. The sculpture can be cleaned with soap and water, if needed, or acetone. A sculpture wax can be applied every six months to give a satin sheen and make any accumulated dust on the piece easier to wash off.
