Caio Fonseca

(American, born 1959)

Caio Fonseca is an American painter best known for his use of tonal harmonies and balanced compositions. Fonseca’s interest in classical music has led him to produce works which animate curvilinear shapes within the structure of the canvas. Born in 1959 in New York, NY, his father was the Uruguayan sculptor Gonzalo Fonseca. Encouraged by his father, he went on to study under the painter Augusto Torres in Barcelona, before living in Paris for a number of years. Returning to New York in 1993, Fonseca began showing around the city and gained traction in the art world. The artist currently lives and works between New York, NY and Pietrasanta, Italy. His works are in the collections of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among others.
