Catalogue note
This painting is an eighteenth-century copy of a work by Carlo Dolci (1616-1686), who produced at least seven iterations of this composition, each with subtle variations. The prototype for the present painting is the version held at the Palazzo Corsini in Rome, which likely dates to the early 1670s and was first recorded in the collection of the Corsini princes in Rome in 1750.1

The canvas has an old glue relining and is stable on its stretcher. The overall image reads relatively clearly beneath a yellowed varnish. There is a four inch horizontal repaired tear to the canvas which bisects Christ's right shoulder. It is visible to the naked eye but stable. Inspection under UV light reveals a thick, milky varnish that somewhat impedes inspection, however previous campaigns of restoration do fluoresce. The painting would almost certainly benefit from a sensitive clean and fresh varnish. Offered in a decorative baroque frame.
