Description
Carol Bove (b. 1971) is an American contemporary artist / sculptor. She was the second artist to be commissioned by the Met (in New York City) to create an installation for the illustrious museum's facade, which was unveiled in March 201.
Known for works that incorporate found and constructed elements with a unique formal, technical, and conceptual inventiveness, Carol Bove stands as one of the foremost contemporary artists working today. Her work has consistently challenged and expanded the possibilities of formal abstraction (especially in three-dimensional forms)
Born in 1971 in Geneva, Bove was raised in Berkeley, California, and studied at New York University. Between 2009 and 2013, she was a clinical associate professor of studio art in Steinhardt’s Department of Art and Art Professions at NYU. The artist joined the roster of the David Zwirner Gallery in 2011.
This delicate screenprint features an abstracted square that seems to evaporate, hovering above a form that alludes to one of Bove's best-known sculptures entitled Caterpillar from 2013. This work, a squiggly tube made of white powder-coated steel and installed in New York's High Line park, which is almost a three-dimensional giant doodle—or an attempt to create what Bove calls “generic sculpture.”
Carol Bove's installations and sculptures have been exhibited internationally and she has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Palais de Tokyo, and Kunsthalle Zürich: Institute of Contemporary Art to name a few. In 2017, Bove represented Switzerland at the 57th Venice Biennale. Other major group exhibitions include Documenta 13, Kassel, Germany (2012); the 54th Venice Biennale (2011); and the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008).
Caviar20 has a particular interest in sculptors who also explore printmaking; Louise Nevelson and Kosso Eloul are two notable examples whose work, in several mediums, frequently appears in our inventory. Hopefully our clients will have similar enthusiasm for Carol Bove.
