Carrie Moyer

(American, born 1960)

Carrie Moyer is a contemporary American painter known for her lush abstractions. Moyer’s abstract imagery is related to both feminist activism and the art historical precedents of Georgia O’Keefe and Joan Miró, among others. “In my work, there’s a playful relationship to some of the most traditional and clichéd imagery of painting, such as landscape, flowers and female figures,” she has explained. “It sneaks in there in humorous ways. When it shows up in the work, I embrace it.” Born in 1960 in Detroit, MI, she received her BFA from Pratt Institute in 1985. During the 1990s, Moyer co-founded the public art project Dyke Action Machine (DAM!), which sought to disrupt and investigate contemporary culture through the insertion of queer and lesbian imagery into posters, zines, and other graphics. Over time, Moyer’s designs merged with her painting practice, creating the biomorphic abstraction she is now known for. The artist received an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College in 2001. She currently lives and works in New York, NY.  Today, her works are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts, and the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in Los Angeles, among others.
