Cathy Wilkes

Biography
Cathy Wilkes is Northern Irish artist known for her large-scale installations. Composed of papier-mâche figures, discarded objects, and paintings, Wilkes’s works focus on themes of domesticity and inner turmoil. “I want to show suffering, frailty and compassion. The objects are part of each other’s suffering, they show companionship and love,” she has explained of her work. “I think sentimentality is important to object relations. Object relations are about openness and distance, the unknown distance between me and everything beyond me and inside me.” Born in 1966 in Belfast, United Kingdom, she attended the Glasgow School of Art and received her MFA from the University of Ulster in 1992. Returning to Glasgow during the mid-1990s, the artist began to exhibiting her over the following decade. She has gone on to be included in the Venice Biennale and was the subject of her first career survey show at MoMA PS1 in 2017. Wilkes continues to live and work in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
