Charles Pachter is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists.

His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums.

"Metro Mourning" is Pachter's tribute to the Toronto public sculpture (found at Dundas and University) titled "Per ardua ad astra" created by famed sculptor Oscar Nemon (1906-1985).

Completed in 1984, the same year this lithograph was created, the sculpture honors the fallen women and men of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The latin title of the sculpture was also the motto of the RCAF (until 1968) and translates to "through adversity to the stars" or "through struggle to the stars".

This monumental memorial was the last major work completed by Nemon before his passing in 1985. Queen Elizabeth II, one of Pachter's most iconic muses, unveiled the statue in Toronto upon it's completion.
