Description
Six canoe tips stacked vertically, painted in colour gradients from lavender to mauve, float upon a turquoise water ground. The work harkens to 1960s colour-field painting and yet is camped in Canadiana. Sifted through the fertile imagination of a much admired Canadian artistic polymath, the painting is a perfect example of Patchter's skill in merging playful even irreverent elements including colour with deeply iconic imagery. Graduate of University of Toronto and the Sorbonne-Paris, Charles Pachter is a leading contemporary Canadian artist. Pachter is a prestigious Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and twice a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee medal. He has honorary Doctorate degrees from the Ontario College of Art & Design University, University of Toronto and Brock University. His paintings are in public and private collections around the world. Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian and author.
