Description
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. Despite his success and recognition, many are unfamiliar with the early part of his artistic career.
A rare work from the early 1960s, this striking lithograph serves as a significant precursor to Pachter's iconic pop art aesthetic. During this period, the artist explored a version of expressionism, imbuing his works with a poignant moodiness and darker palette. These works from the '60s are in stark contrast to his signature graphic style that would evolve in the following decade.
"The Medium" features an intimate, close-cropped portrait of a mysterious figure who confronts the viewer with a direct and curious gaze. This work is exemplary of Pachter's emotive and slightly melancholic approach in the 1960s, a style that would completely vanish from his oeuvre in the following decade.
Pachter's work is represented in both public and private collections across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Portrait Gallery of Canada, The Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Pachter holds the prestigious position of Officer of the Order of Canada and is also a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal.
