Description
Caviar20 had the recent privilege of going through Charles Pachter's archive to select a grouping of works on paper from the 1970s and 1980s.
During this era Pachter completed a considerable amount of drawings - however many of these were independent of the series or motifs he is renowned for. Pachter documented his friends in casual and lighthearted scenarios, especially during the summertime in the country surrounding Toronto.
The works on paper from this period are interesting contrasts to his famous portraits (commissioned by City and Country Home Magazine) done during 1988-1991. (Click here to see an example of one of the commissioned portraits.)
These remarkably charming and well-executed drawings are another reminder of the artist's expert draftsmanship. Most have never been previously offered commercially.
"Chaise Chill" is a fine example of Pachter's mastery and genius in conveying a complex object with remarkable economy and elegance.
Pachter's impressive continuous line drawing presents a chaise lounge in an unusual perspective, depicting a reclining figure whose relaxed feet and a dangling hand evocatively appear. Notice the details of the chair’s crossbars, and the creases of the pushed-up pants.
Today Charles Pachter's work can be found in numerous public and corporate collections including the AGO, the Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal, Harvard and McGill Universities, the Portrait Gallery of Canada, Coca Cola, CIBC and Canada Trust to mention a few. More and more private and institutional collectors are discovering and embracing Charles Pachter's wonderful line drawings.
