Description
Wafer thin layers of warm, textured fiery red glass frit are stacked to create an undulating, organic composition. The sculptural glass works of Cheryl Wilson-Smith are rooted in a theme of the duality of fragility and strength. The title of the work translates from Gaelic as "a new red Gaelic arc."
Overall her work is inspired by the perspective gained from her life in northern Ontario – a keen appreciation for the fragile and temporary nature of being human while standing on the Canadian Shield in the Boreal Forest, a vast stretch of dense forest that runs the breath of North America.
In 2016, Wilson-Smith exhibited in Edinburgh Scotland with the Scottish Glass Society. She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery that published a description of her work: “Wilson’-Smith’s delicate and complex kiln-cast works are inspired by the Boreal Forest and rock shores of Red Lake where she lives. Created by translating drawings into countless individual layers of glass frit, her sculptures push the limits of glass while interpreting the northern Ontario light, landscape and wilderness.” Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
