Cheryl Wilson Smith’s glass wall sculptures seem to have been chiselled from the face of a rocky outcrop in an ancient forest. The glass finds inspiration for her distinctive artwork in the rugged landscape that surrounds her Northern Ontario home. Each wafer-thin layer of glass frit (ground glass) is hand-made, assembled and fired to create these uniquely beautiful pieces. The colour pallet of this sculpture is earthy—grays, blacks and browns but it is the addition of pieces of mossy green that draw the viewer’s eye. One in a series.

She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. She is the recipient of the prestigious Chalmers Fellowship from the Ontario Arts Council which allowed her to work in Scotland in 2023. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
