Chintamoni KarChintamoni Kar, a renowned Indian sculptor, was born on April 13th, 1915 in Kharagpur, West Bengal. He was taught to sculpt by Giridhari Mahapatra and Victor Giovanelli. Kar’s training was done at the Indian Society of Oriental Art run by Rabinindranath Tagore. Kar moved to Paris in 1938, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière before moving back to India.
He made use of various
Medium: s and materials such as wood, metal, terracotta and stone. His formal training included a representational style, but his chain of thought drifted off into a more abstract state. His abstract landscapes depict his love for nature and the atypical style of art. Kar taught at the University of Calcutta and the Delhi Polytechnic and later in 1946 moved to London where he became a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. He returned to West Bengal in 1956 and was then elected as Principal of the Government College of Art & Craft. In 1974 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, by the government of India. He was also bestowed upon with France's highest civilian honour in 2000. Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary was named after the sculptor. He passed away in 2005.
