Description
These works depict the Satyr, part-man, part-animal woodland spirit found throughout Greek mythology. Satyrs were companions of Dionysus - his musical band of merry-makers - and are known for their ribaldry, lust for both wine and women, and insatiable sexual appetite. As many of you know, Chris has long worked with classical mythology. Satyrs also appear in Ovid's Metamorphosis, which Chris focussed on in 2012 in his body of work around the story of Diana and Acteaon for the collaborative project between the National Gallery and Royal Opera House, Metamorphosis: Titian 2012. Titian also painted a satyr, Marsyas, in The Flaying of Marsyas, one of his series of late works based on Ovid's Metamorphosis and which is in the collection of The Met. Chris's satyr possesses a serene expression and appears to be in a state of repose, unlike many depictions of satyrs throughout art history, which portrayed these creatures engaging in wild or indecent behaviour.
