Chung-Im Kim interprets the beautiful and intricately detailed patterns she sees in the natural world by creating unique wall tapestries. The fibre artist sews together small pieces of industrial felt pulled taut to create a stunning 3-D effect.

In this diamond-shaped creamy coloured piece, fine dark markings on the fabric add delicate detail using natural shapes. The word, ‘boonyul’ means ‘division’ or ‘split’ in Korean, a reference to the concept of growth in nature, (i.e., When a cell divides and continues to grow.)

She was born in Seoul, Korea and received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984. Kim began her career working in the textile industry as a surface pattern designer while also running a studio in Seoul and teaching at a college before moving to Canada in 1990. She has been a resident in the Textile Studio at Harbourfront Centre, working as a freelancer in the design industry for over fifteen years.
