For over half a century now, Barker has cast sculptures in bronze and other materials, largely from found objects, and finished them impeccably in a variety of surfaces, often just polished, so that they gleam like luxury commodities. The conceptual method of his creation, based on his observations as a very young man working at the assembly line of a car factory has gone hand in hand with an intense subjectivity of his selection and an insistence on the sensuous physicality of the objects. Barker was part of the celebrated 'Swinging Sixties' alongside his art dealer Robert Fraser. Barker's work was the subject of exhibitions world wide, including London, Brussels, Paris, Houston, Dallas, Cologne, Frankfurt, Osaka. During the 1980's Barker had his first Retrospective. A Very Nice Bag is a delicious example of Barker's pushing the limits of casting the found object.
