Dagobert Peche

(Austrian, 1887–1923)

Dagobert Peche was an Austrian artist and designer. Often credited for ushering in a new era in the decorative arts, Peche's skill and experience as a trained architect informed his practice. Focusing on ornamental object design, which he often rendered in shades of black and gold, he was jointly inspired by Austrian folk art and Rococo, earning his style the moniker “Spiky Baroque.” His objects and illustrations often feature recurring imagery such as harlequin figures, cherubs, and nudes in repose. Peche worked freely between non-delineated disciplines, including graphic arts, postcards, textiles, furniture, glass, jewelry, and toys. Born on April 3, 1887 in Salzburg, Austria, he died in Vienna on April 16, 1923.
