Description
Damien Hirst, perhaps the most famous member of the Young British Artists, rose to prominence through his ground-breaking sculptures and prints, which are known for challenging the boundaries between high and low culture and art and science. His "spot" prints and paintings, now instantly recognizable, have become an international sensation in the contemporary art world. Inspired by drug companies' scientific approach to human life, the spot paintings for Hirst espouse a scientific approach to painting.
These pharmaceutical prints and paintings, first exhibited in 1988, are Hirst's way of experimenting with endless arrangements of color. The present woodcut titled M-Fluorobenzylamine uses 88 colors to create 88 distinct spots. The experience of viewing this print as one's eyes are forced to dart around the sheet in order to take in the vast combination of colors is dizzying.
