Daniel Hughes pays homage to classical painting techniques with a loose hand. Bold, modulated color brushstrokes showcases formal composition in a new and refreshing light. Well known for his sensitive and thoughtful portraits, this is an excellent example of his work. The very masculine portrait is of Andrew Crater, former professional American cyclist.

Hughes graduated from the New York Academy of Art (MFA, 1995) and received the Elizabeth Greenshields Award for Figurative Art in 1991 and 1995. He has had solo shows throughout Canada, England and the US, and was part of a prestigious group show at The National Portrait Gallery in London (2005). He was shortlisted for the British Portrait Prize in 2012, and has been shortlisted for the Canadian Portrait Prize in 2015.
