David Hilliard

(American, born 1964)

David Hilliard is a contemporary American photographer known for his large-scale color prints. Often arranged as triptychs, from panel to panel, Hilliard shifts the focal plane of the subject, creating a panoramic sense of space. Through his work, the artist probes his identity, tensions, fears, and conflicting emotions about his sexuality while still appealing to a broad audience. “Each moment in my life and yours is rubbing shoulders with the previous one and the next. And that’s what’s happening in my work. Moments rubbing up against other moments,” he has explained. Born on May 15, 1964 in Lowell, MA, he received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1994. The artist currently lives and works in Boston, MA. Today, Hilliard’s works are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
