In this piece, Derya Ozparlak’s stunning steel figure of a woman hangs upside down, her long hair trailing behind her as she’s carried away by a bouquet of shiny red balloons.
Ozparlak’s metal sculptures are intended as a metaphor for the angst of the human condition. A female figure tethered to balloons appears to fly away but she is not free. In the modern capitalistic world, Ozparlak has observed that we are bound to both our past and our present. Can we ever be truly free?

Since completing a BFA from the Anadolu University in Turkey, Ozparlak has exhibited in group and solo shows in Canada and internationally in Italy, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon and the US. She now lives and works in Toronto. Ozparlak’s highly detailed sculptures are held in private and corporate collections in Canada and internationally in Istanbul, Berlin and Capri.
