‘Camelot’ is a large abstract narrative oil on panel painting created by American artist Doug Frohman in 2016. Featuring a palette made of grey, beige, yellow, blue, red and black, the painting showcases a composition à la Mondrian with a perfect organization of large rectangular areas containing the various colors. The resemblance with Mondrian stops here however, as Frohman does not limit his palette to primary colors and alternates solid areas with textured fields. The colors are directly contrasted to one another without a separation of any sort, in a perfect symbiosis. The title, inspired by the Arthurian Legend, reminds us of the artist’s passion for architecture and the result reflects on his constant reflection upon the interconnection of things. Unframed, this large square format will create a stunning focal point in any home, whether placed above a sofa, enfilade or console table. Frohman’s work has been exhibited and collected across the US including Library of Congress, Washington, DC, Weiss Memorial Hospital, Chicago, IL, Doris & Jerome Hirschmann Foundation, Wilmette, IL.
Doug Frohman is a mid-career American artist based in Chicago creating dynamic 2-D and 3-D contemporary art that draws the viewer into a world of its own. Utilizing the language of abstraction Doug’s works draw upon architecture and spatial relationships whose mobility and activity are influenced by the interconnections of the modern digital landscape. Frohman frequently utilizes oil and encaustic with a cement trowel on wood or canvas panels.
His varying media, platforms and styles combine to create a variety of dynamic relationships where areas of bold color meet specific edges, creating dynamic tension dovetailed with areas of rest. The improvisational layering that takes place draws upon the structure of music, especially jazz, which Mr. Frohman has played for many years. In jazz performance, each instrument follows certain lines while interacting with the other musicians and the chord progressions of the music. The instruments swoop under, inside and around the chords to create the rhythm, colors and dynamic movement of the piece. In similar fashion, elements in Mr. Frohman's work move between active fields of color, areas of focus and defining edges giving the work its spatial dimension and dynamic movement.
