Timeline
Ellen Schiffman is a multimedia American artist who frequently uses fiber and fiber art techniques. An avid explorer, she also utilizes unexpected and commonplace materials in her work including Q Tips, cotton twill tape, items from nature, found objects and more. Her inspiration is drawn from across cultures and time, with imagery inspired both by the randomness of nature and the intentionality and splendor of human creations. Moments of vulnerability and transition, as well as the beauty of imperfection, all interest her. While the work embodies fragility, it also speaks of the possibility of change, growth and resilience. Born in 1953 in NYC she currently works in Connecticut. She has exhibited her work nationwide including solo shows at the Fuller Craft Museum in MA and the Mercy Gallery in CT. Invitational and juried group shows include those at Fiberart International in Pittsburgh, the Mattatuck Museum in CT, Wayne Art Center in PA, the Silvermine Gallery in CT, The Flinn Gallery in CT. She has received numerous awards including most recently the top prize in sculpture at the Providence Art Club International Juried exhibit.
