Eloy Morales
(Spanish, born 1973)
Biography
Eloy Morales is a contemporary Spanish painter best known for his large, hyperrealistic portraits of himself and others smeared with paint. His large-scale oil paintings continue a Photorealist tradition of portraiture that includes the work of Robin Eley, Frank Bauer, and Chuck Close. With care and patience, Morales’ technique for painting starts by filling a small square inch with pigment and slowly blending and building up the image from there. “It's a conceptual self-portrait, a reflection of my complex relationship with paint,” the artist has said. Born on December 28, 1973 in Madrid, Spain, Morales received his formal training at Complutense University in Madrid. He currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain.
