(American, 1896–1978)
Biography
Emile Albert Gruppe was an American painter, known for his depictions of the autumnal and wintry landscapes of New England, as well as maritime port scenes and sailing ships. The artist’s work is reminiscent of the Post-Impressionist style, whose notable members include Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Born in 1896 in Rochester, NY, Gruppe spent his youth in The Netherlands, studying art under his father, and returning to the United States at the onset of World War I. He studied painting at the National Academy in New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. Gruppe would eventually move to Gloucester, MA, where he would remain until his death in 1978.
