Émile Jacques Ruhlmann
(French, 1879–1933)
Biography
Émile Jacques Ruhlmann was a furniture designer whose work epitomized the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. Translating Neoclassical motifs into Modern proportions and sensibilities, Ruhlmann’s notably architectonic designs were known for their use of exotic woods and inlays of ivory, lacquer, precious metals, and scrollwork. Born in Paris, France, on August 28, 1879, he was the son of a decorating contractor, and took over the family business in 1907, where he expanded into furniture design and interior decoration. By the end of his career, he was envisioning entire rooms and their contents. His use of luxury materials often rendered his designs prohibitively expensive, but the patronage of the newly wealthy class of post-World War I Paris made him a successful and sought-after designer. In 1925, at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Ruhlmann’s pavilion was the most popular attraction. However, the worldwide economic depression following the stock market crash of 1929 brought an end to the luxurious lifestyle that maintained an audience for Ruhlmann’s designs. Ruhlmann died on November 15, 1933 in Paris.
