Emma Åvall is based in Norway. A big part of her painting practice revolves around digital expressions. The artist is interested in the virtual world in contemporary society and refers frequently to digitization, photography, censorship and digital manipulation in her paintings. But photography is also an important part of the preparatory work and the process. There is something about the transformation from a photograph to a painting that interests her, she explores what happens along the way and what makes the two different.

Emma Åvall questions issues around representation and portraiture. What would happen if certain things were to be removed? And is a portrait still a portrait if the face is not visible? Various forms of anonymity are recurring in her artworks. Contrasts and fragmentations can create question marks and a wonder what has been left out for the viewer.
