Description
Ernst Haas (1921-1986) is a prolific Austrian-American photographer and photojournalist. Haas made significant contributions to the advancement of photography over the course of his career spanning 40 years.
Haas is best known for his early innovation with color photography, making his name synonymous with the medium. His dynamic 1953 story on New York, "Images of a Magic City" was the primary subject for LIFE Magazine's first color issue. Additionally, in 1962, Haas' was featured in a solo exhibition, "Ernst Haas: Color Photography", and the first-ever color photography retrospective at The Met.
In addition to his historic recognition, Haas is also remembered for his technical mastery. Haas is responsible for introducing his innovative use of shutter speed, which was dramatically slowed down to produce his signature blurred and impressionistic effects.
While Haas only ever explored photography, he was highly experimental within the medium. Diverse in style, technique, and subject matter, Haas was eager to expand his practice, expanding the medium while pushing the boundaries of what was possible.
"Hollywood California" is an evocative work that is exemplary of Haas' distinct technique and atmospheric charm. The photograph features a glamorous woman adorn in black-tie attire, her back turned to the camera as she stands in front of an energetic crowd of onlookers.
Haas' signature soft blur captures the transience of the moment, amplifying the dazzling Hollywood spirit and mystique this piece evokes.
In 1986, Haas was the recipient of the Hasselblad Award in recognition of his outstanding achievement. Today, Haas' work is celebrated internationally with work in public collections across the globe including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the National Museum of Art (Kyoto), and Museum Ludwig (Cologne).
