Description
Condition Very Good - There is an old superficial hairline crack that goes halfway around the left wrist and is stable.
This classical bronze statue of a victorious and handsome young man is called "Victory" or "The Victor". It depicts an athletic young Greco- Roman man wearing cuirass and greaves is decorated with acanthus patterning. In a celebratory manner, he raises hands above his head. In his left hand, he holds traditional symbols of victory: oak leaves and a laurel wreath and is standing atop a globe or sphere and is attached to a circular black onyx base. . A similar version of this bronze is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was conceived as a larger work in 1903 in a monumental form for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1904. In 1908 there were smaller reductions. This later cast is one and is stunning with a rich beautiful bronze with shiny brown patina. Sotheby's Arcade Paintings, 2006 - Inscribed No 20 © Evelyn B. Longman and dated 1908 on the spherical base. inscribed Roman Bronze Works N.Y. on the rim of the base. Best known for sculpting the "Genius of Electricity" (originally called the "Spirit of Communication" and informally known as the Golden Boy) atop the AT&T Building on Broadway in Manhattan, the sculptor Evelyn Beatrice Longman was the first woman sculptor to be elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1919. She worked as an assistant to Daniel Chester French ( the sculptor of Abraham Lincoln /Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C.
