Description
"And the animal as such, especially the cow, was actually a very important animal to me because in its phases of life there are really only three or four forms in which it moves. That is lying down, standing up and eating."
Ewald Mataré's work is known for its outstanding animal sculptures, which deal with horses, cats, birds or bulls, but above with the motif of the cow. From cattle to calves, the artist has explored this subject in his sculptures many times. Although there are hints of Expressionism, detached from it, Mataré has developed his own formal language. Following principles of simplification and reduction, he concentrates on the essentials of his figures and thus captures their essence. In the sculpture "Stehende Kuh (Windkuh)" from 1923, Mataré pays attention to individual peculiarities of its physiognomy, but these are subordinate to the overall concept of the simple, organic form.
The work goes back to a wooden sculpture that Mataré had worked on in List on Sylt in the same year. It is the earliest of the artist's archaic works, which represent the peak of his artistic work.
Ewald Mataré is considered one of the most important German sculptors of the 20th century. He was originally trained in classical painting, but after 1920 he focused on sculpture and graphic art. In addition to bronze, he worked with various materials, mainly wood, and used different techniques. Defamed by the National Socialists as a "degenerate artist", Mataré was forced to give up his later teaching position at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, but was able to continue it after the Second World War. Among his best-known students was Joseph Beuys, who assisted him with his commissions for the doors of Cologne Cathedral.
