Description
Federico del Campo is counted among the supreme painters of Venetian views in the second half of the 19th century. This highly detailed composition of the Canale della Giudecca is a remarkable example of his output. He captures a sweeping view of the Zattere, a spacious promenade that was first built as a dock in the early 16th century. Gondoliers crowd in front of the façade of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Visitazione, awaiting their next passenger, while larger cargo rigs are viewed in the distance. Immediately recognizable thanks to its commanding Corinthian columns, I Gesuati stands further down on the Zattere facing the Giudecca canal. The panoramic view is a stunning tribute to Venice's grand architecture and history, all captured with del Campo's distinctive attention to atmosphere and detail.
Born in Lima, del Campo studied in Madrid with Lorenzo Valles (1830-1910), an artist who himself worked a great deal in Italy. Del Campo exhibited his Venetian scenes at the Paris Salon in 1880 and at the Madrid Art Exhibition of 1881, after traveling extensively throughout Italy for many years. The main body of del Campo's work consists of Venetian views demonstrating a vivid palette, a comprehensive understanding of his subject and an extraordinary degree of technical mastery. His paintings are regarded among the greatest renderings of the Venetian landscape and are sought by collectors around the world.
