Federico Uribe

(Colombian, born 1962)

Federico Uribe is a contemporary Colombian artist best known for his whimsical paintings and sculptures. Frequently representational and humorous, his work are often comprised of nontraditional materials such as shoelaces, colored pencils, and electric wire. “If you relate to the objects, good. If it makes you smile, better,” he said of his work. “If it makes you think, I'm sure you're not thinking what I thought.” Born in 1962 in Bogotá, Colombia, Uribe studied at the University of Los Andes in his hometown before moving to the United States in 2000. The artist’s assemblage-based practice pays homage to the process of making while also making light of its historical significance. Currently living and working in Miami, FL, Uribe has received solo exhibitions at several national institutions, including the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida, and the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C.
