Description
Through a consideration of the pine cone as a colonization device, Elzinga explores the nature of seeds and highlights their aggressive regeneration. This long, sleek pine cone is made from a steel that naturally rusts, producing an orange-brown surface over time, and allowing the sculpture to more closely resemble the object on which it was modelled.
Floyd Elzinga's work explores traditional landscape through non-traditional techniques. Strongly influenced by the natural and cultivated environment surrounding his studio on the Niagara Escarpment, each creation is a direct reference to his distinctly Canadian perspective. Elzinga's pine cone sculptures have been featured as part of Toronto's Scotiabank Nuit Blanche celebration of contemporary art, and his work is held in collections across southern Ontario. Floyd received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, NS.
